EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE baseball Head Coach Tony Stoecklin has announced the addition of two transfers to the program. Sophomore Jarret Bednar (Decatur, Ill.) comes to the Cougars after playing at Rend Lake Community College. Junior Doug Putkowski (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) joins SIUE after playing at Suffolk County (N.Y.) Community College.
Bednar, a 6-foot, 6-inch, right-handed pitcher, made 11 starts for Rend Lake in 2013. He compiled a 7-1 record and a 2.96 earned run average. He struck out 44 hitters while walking only 13 in 67 innings of work.
"He's a competitor," SIUE Head Coach Tony Stoecklin said. "He has great life on his fastball, and he throws strikes."
Bednar will have three years of eligibility remaining at SIUE. He tossed just 12 1/3 innings as a freshman at Rend Lake, missing the rest of the season after an innocuous "tuft" was removed from the right side of his brain in March 2012.
"He's a tough kid," Stoecklin continued. "He has already had to deal with a serious health issue. He knows what real adversity is."
Aside from baseball, Bednar played three years of varsity basketball and two years of varsity golf at Decatur St. Teresa High School. He also was a member of the National Honor Society.
Putkowski, a 5-9 outfielder, earned All-Region first team honors after hitting .443 in 32 games with Suffolk County this season. The right-handed hitter added six doubles, five triples, 29 RBIs and 31 runs scored for the Sharks. He added 11 stolen bases in 12 attempts. Suffolk finished the year 24-12, falling in the Regional playoffs. Putkowski was named to the Region 15 All-Tournament team.
"He has great speed and a plus-arm from the outfield," Stoecklin said. "He has the ability to step in and be our everyday centerfielder."
Putkowski was a member of the honor roll all four years at Mt. Sinai High School. He also made the Dean's list both years at Suffolk County.
"Both of these two are outstanding students and great kids as well," Stoecklin added.
