EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Austin Peay got a pair of two-run home runs Saturday on its way to a 6-2 win over SIUE in the second game of a three-game Ohio Valley Conference baseball series at Simmons Baseball Complex.
"The bottom line is that they were better than us," SIUE Head Coach Gary Collins said. "They gave us a few chances; we just couldn't take advantage of them."
Austin Peay improved to 28-17 overall and 14-5 in the OVC. SIUE fell to 23-24 and 9-11 in the OVC.
Greg Bachman connected on his second two-run home run of the series in the second inning to put the Govs up 2-0. Jordan Hankins added a two-run shot, his second homer of the series, in the third inning to make it 4-0. Austin Peay added another run in the third to make it 5-0.
"The middle of their lineup is as good as we have seen," Collins said. "If you make any mistakes, they punish you on it, and we made two big mistakes."
The Govs got some help on defense as well. SIUE put the first two hitters on base in the bottom of the fourth inning. Mitch Matecki singled, before Joel Greatting reached on an error. Devin Caldwell followed and hit a sharp bounding ball to third. Bachman stepped on third base, then fired to Hankins at second, who relayed the ball to Tyler Childress at first, completing a triple play.
"I'm not sure I have seen a triple play quite like that (while at SIUE)," Collins said.
Caldwell would make amends in the sixth with a two-run double to left center to make it 5-2. Austin Peay added a run in the ninth for the final margin.
Travis Felax (5-4) tossed 6 1/3 innings in the loss. He allowed five runs on 11 hits. He struck out seven. Ryan Quick (5-2) earned the win in a seven-inning start for the Govs. He allowed the two runs on six hits. He struck out one.
The final game of the series is set for Sunday. First pitch comes at 1 p.m.
