JONESBORO, Ark. – SIUE baseball opened a five-game spring break road trip with a 5-3 victory at Arkansas State Tuesday night.
SIUE improved to 6-5 with the win and now has won four of its last five games. Arkansas State dropped to 7-5 with the loss.
"It's great to start the trip with a win," SIUE Head Coach Gary Collins said. "It's a great start."
The Cougars scored their five runs in the first four innings then hung on for the win. SIUE went up 1-0 thanks to a groundout by Mitch Matecki in the first inning. Matecki's groundout to the shortstop scored James Vazquez, who had walked to start the game.
Vazquez made it 4-0 in the fourth with a two-run double. Becherer followed in the inning and singled to drive in Vazquez to make it 5-0 SIUE. Vazquez was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Devin Caldwell was 3-4. Becherer and Matecki were each 1 for 4 with an RBI.
The Redwolves used a pair of walks and a hit batter to load the bases with two outs in the fifth inning. Alex Potts then walked to force in a run. Collin Massanelli then singled to drive in two more runs, making it 5-3.
Drew Staples started for the Cougars and allowed two runs over 4 1/3 innings. He struck out two and did not figure into the decision. Dylan Brown (1-0) followed and allowed a run on one hit. He walked one and struck out one and was awarded the win.
"We worked really hard for those five runs," Collins said. "They didn't have to work too hard for their three (runs)."
Arkansas State finished with just three total hits against the four SIUE pitchers.
The Cougars and Redwolves will complete the series with game two Wednesday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
