EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Morehead State won the finale of a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series, defeating SIUE 12-4 Saturday afternoon at Simmons Baseball Complex. The Eagles won two of three from the Cougars to win the series.
In a series that had been dominated by good pitching, Morehead State (18-15, 5-4 OVC) scored 12 runs on 13 hits against three SIUE pitchers Saturday.
Thad Hawkins (1-2) suffered the loss allowing four runs on two hits. He walked six hitters, hit a batter and struck out only two
"It sure wasn't the way to end the series," Head Coach Gary Collins said. "I didn't expect Thad to go out there and walk six and hit one, but he did."
Tony Schaeffer allowed four runs on seven hit over four innings of relief. He stuck out one. Brooks McDowell gave up four runs on four hits in two innings.
Nick Duff paced Morehead State, going 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Eric Bainer was 3 for 5 with two RBIs. Luke Bainer and Andrew Deeds each had two hits and two RBIs for the Eagles.
Matt Highland led the way for the Cougars. He was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Mitch Matecki was 2 for 4 with a solo home run.
SIUE (14-17, 3-6 OVC) trailed 7-1 in the sixth before getting a pair on with one out. The Cougars settled for a run and left two on base. It was 8-2 in the eighth inning when the Cougars loaded the bases with nobody out. They scored a run on a double play before Highland singled to drive in another to make it 8-4. They left two on base in the eighth as well.
"We did have a couple chances throughout the game to get back into it, and we just couldn't come up with a hit," Collins said. "We just don't have any big RBI guys. It seems like no one wants to drive in a run."
