RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky's Matt Harris limited SIUE to just four hits in a complete game victory Friday in game one of a three-game Ohio Valley Conference baseball series at Turkey Hughes Field.
"We didn't hit at all today," SIUE Head Coach Gary Collins said. "We didn't ever really threaten."
Harris struck out five and walked two. He improved to 3-3 with his first complete game of the year.
"He wasn't overpowering," Collins said of Harris. "He was doing something right. We didn't center any balls."
SIUE (13-12) took a 1-0 lead on a two-out solo home run from Zach Hawkins in the second inning. Hawkins finished 1 for 2 with the only RBI for SIUE.
Eastern Kentucky (10-15) answered with a pair of home run in the bottom of the inning. Bryan Solomon and A.J. Jamison each connected on solo home runs off SIUE starter Travis Felax to put the Colonels up 2-1. EKU scored a run in the third inning and two more in the fourth against Felax.
Felax allowed five runs on seven hits over 6 1/3 innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out five. Felax retired the last 10 hitters he faced.
"Travis got some pitches up and the wind was blowing out," Collins said. "He settled down and pitched o.k."
The Colonels scored three times on two hits in the seventh inning for the final margin.
Solomon and Jamison were each 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs to lead the Colonels. Austin Grisham was 2 for 4 with an RBI.
The second game of the series is set for Saturday. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. central time.
