MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis scored three runs in first inning, added a run in the third and then four runs in the fourth to open up an 8-0 lead Saturday before cruising to a 12-2 victory over SIUE in baseball at FedEx Park.
Both Memphis and SIUE are now 1-1 for the season. The two teams will play the rubber match of the three-game series Sunday afternoon.
The Cougars scored both of their runs in the eighth inning. Matt Highland had the only RBI for SIUE with a pinch-hit RBI in the inning. Highland drove in Nick Lombardo with a single. James Vazquez scored on a balk later in the inning. Highland finished 1 for 2 with the RBI. Vaquez was 2 for 4 for the Cougars, who managed just five hits against four Memphis pitchers.
Sophomore Ryan Daniels suffered the loss in his first start of the season. Daniels allowed four earned runs on three hits. He struck out two but walked four. Denton Reed tossed five innings in relief in his first collegiate appearance. Reed also allowed four runs, however none were earned. He walked one and struck out two. Drew Staples allowed three runs in an inning of work in his Cougar debut.
Jacob Wilson was 2 for 3 with four RBIs and three runs scored to lead the Memphis attack. Ethan Gross was 3 for 4 with three runs scored.
Dan Langfield did not allow a run on just two hits over seven innings to earn the win for the Tigers. He struck out seven and walked only two.
First pitch Sunday is set for 1 p.m. Senior Travis Hoguet is scheduled to make the start for the Cougars.
