KENNESAW, Ga. - Kennesaw State used a 12-0 run after SIUE took its first lead of the second half and went on for a 71-60 victory over the Cougars.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Owls, now 6-11. Southern Illinois University Edwardsville fell to 2-15 overall.
The quick run in the second half propelled Kennesaw State as it held the lead for the rest of the game. Markeith Cummings and Kurtis Woods keyed Kennesaw State's offense with 20 points each.
SIUE's Denykco Bowles recorded his second straight double-double with 11 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.
SIUE Coach Lennox Forrester acknowledged Bowles' effort but wanted others to step up. "One guy can't do it alone," he said.
After a sluggish first half when both teams shot less than 25 percent from the field, Kennesaw State closed out the first 20 minutes with a 24-20 lead.
"I thought our guys played hard defensively," said Forrester. Kennesaw State shot 20.7 percent in the first half and hit just 1 of 10 from three-point range.
The Cougars would open the second half by scoring seven of the first nine points to take a 27-26 lead. SIUE shot 51.7 percent from the field in the second half and connected on 6 of 9 from three-point range.
Kennesaw State then quickly took advantage for the 12-0 run with four free throws and four field goals over a period of 2 minutes and 30 seconds.
Both teams pounded the boards, especially on the offensive end. Kennesaw State pulled down 20 offensive rebounds and picked up 20 second-half points. SIUE grabbed 15 offensive boards and turned in 12 second-chance points.
KSU's LaDaris Green led both teams with 18 rebounds, including six on the offensive boards.
The most glaring statistic was the difference in fouls and free throws. SIUE committed 22 fouls while Kennesaw State was called for 11 in the game. The Owls turned it into 24 of 32 from the free throw line. SIUE finished 7 of 11 from the free throw line.
SIUE hit nine three-pointers, often making runs at the Owls in the second half. Yelovich, McCleary and Cody Rincker each finished with three three-pointers.
The Cougars are now idle for seven days. SIUE travels to Morehead, Ky., to take on future Ohio Valley Conference opponent Morehead State. Game time is 7:05 p.m. Eastern time and can be heard on 590 The Fan KFNS and WSIE FM 88.7.
