EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE softball swept a home midweek nonconference doubleheader from Kansas City 13-2 in five innings and 6-5 in the nightcap.
The Cougars improved to 19-24 overall and next face Southern Indiana this weekend for a three-game series at Cougar Field. Kansas City dropped to 14-24.
The weather posed a temporary problem in between games with a more than an hour wait due to thunderstorms at Cougar Field. That didn't see to bother the Cougars as Ben Sorden recorded win No. 100 as the Cougars' head coach.
In game one, SIUE matched its season high in hits with 12 but scored 13 in the process.
The offense started right away against Kansas City starter Delilah Robles.
Juztyne Torres singled and stole second base. Raegan Duncan drew a walk, and Ashley Duran brought home all three with one swing of the bat. Duran blasted her third home run of the season to put SIUE up 3-0.
The Cougars' offense overwhelmed Kansas City in the second inning, scoring eight runs. Duran added two more RBIs on a single. The Cougars also scored RBI hits from Gretchen Trello, Abby Harvell and Kaylin Fahy.
Avery Arwood went the distance in game one, striking out five and yielding just five hits.
In game two, the Roos jumped out to a 3-0 lead early, but the Cougars started their comeback in the bottom of the second.
Betsy Woodward hit a solo home run, her second of the season to cut the lead to 3-1.
It was just an inning later that the Cougars regained the lead 4-3 on another Duran home run. Again, it was the three-RBI kind for her team-leading fourth homer of 2026.
Kansas City struck back with two runs in the fourth and snuck back into the lead.
The Cougars tied the game in the fifth with another long ball. Abby Harvell sent a two-out solo home run over the left field fence.
SIUE's defense stepped up in the top of the seventh, doubling off an aggressive baserunner. Woodward snagged a liner from Maya Anthony and doubled off Katie Noble, who had doubled to start the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, Betsy Woodward reached on a fielder's choice. With two out, Trello delivered the gapping triple to right center that allowed Woodward to score standing up.
