EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – With another spring season coming to a close, SIUE student-athletes continue to demonstrate their dedication to excelling in the classroom.
SIUE student-athletes have now recorded a departmental cumulative grade point average above 3.0 for the 26th consecutive semester. That's a 13-year stretch of excellence.
"This is great work by all in the department -- our Faculty Athletics Representative, Intercollegiate Athletic Committee (ICAC) Chair, student-athletes, staff, and coaches," said SIUE Director of Athletics Dr. Brad Hewitt. "We also are fortunate to have support and engagement from great academic mentors, faculty and university staff; and we have one of the finest and most dedicated Academic Services staff in the entire country."
A remarkable 64 percent of SIUE's student-athletes earned term GPAs above a 3.0. Forty student-athletes completed the spring term with a perfect 4.0.
As a department, SIUE Athletics recorded a 3.303 GPA.
Five SIUE freshmen finished the year with a perfect 4.0. Nine returning student-athletes continue to maintain a 4.0 GPA.
The SIUE softball team claimed the best team grade point average (3.703) followed by volleyball (3.528) and women's basketball (3.442). Men's soccer posted the top GPA (3.433) among male teams. The other teams also recording a team GPA above 3.0 are women's tennis (3.389), women's cross country (3.323), women's track and field (3.291), men's golf (3.288), women's soccer (3.259), men's track and field (3.190), and men's cross country (3.149).
"Everyone is making a difference in the lives of these young people and help us achieve this great benchmark," said Hewitt. "After 26 semesters or 13 years, we are past saying this is an annual goal. It is an SIUE Athletics tradition of excellence. In all my years of service at SIUE, this is one of my proudest associations with this University's success."
