EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The generosity for SIUE Athletics at the recent fourth annual Red & Black Benefit was on display as officials announced that the record-setting support for the event was more than $160,000.
"This year is the sign that things are better," said SIUE Director of Athletics Dr. Brad Hewitt. "People are starting to re-engage their philanthropic support with the University and SIUE Athletics."
The Red & Black Benefit, presented by Simmons Hanly Conroy, a National Law Firm, is a yearly fundraising event for SIUE Athletics. The proceeds, which totaled $160,527, will go directly to support Cougar scholarship needs.
The benefit, held at the Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark, featured numerous live auction items and silent auction items. A total of $15,000 was generated off the 90 silent auction items featured and a total of $39,250 was generated in the live auction. The live auction items were donated by Tom & Karen Gerdes (Southern Bus & Mobility), Craig and Jane Louer, Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark, Mike & Maureen Moore, Alicia and Michael McConnell, Dion & Claudia Joannou, SIUE Chancellor Randy Pembrook & Dr. Mary Jo Pembrook, Ken Hyten, Linda Fleming & Friendship Farms, and Shannon Mays.
More than 350 tickets were purchased for the event. Between live auction, silent auction and fund the need donations, more than $86,750 was raised. Ticket sales and the generous sponsorships accounted for the rest of the incoming funds.
