Cross Country Sees Five PR’s in Opener

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The SIUE men had all five runners finish in the top-30, including four personal bests. The women looked strong with one personal best at the Walt Crawford Open.

The double-dual formatted event saw the men win three of five duals.

Tyler Owens was the top competitor for the men, finishing 10th overall and running a personal best 25:56.02. Haley Miller had the fastest time for the women (10th, 18:36.56)

"We had a great day of testing our team's strengths," Assistant Coach Kayla Brown said. "We learned what segments of the race we need to improve on."

The Cougars had four personal best times at the 8k course, with Owens followed by Austin Woodard (13th, 26:02.60), Landon Skelly (17th, 26:22.34) and Matthew O'Connor (22nd, 26:39.79). Freshmen Liam O'Connell had an impressive first showing for the SIUE (29th, 26:55.82).

In the women's 5k race, Miller was followed by Allie Sweatt (23rd, 19:02.80), Aly Goff with a PR (29th, 19:13.08), Keri Burmester (34th, 19:21.08) and Kassidy Dexheimer (46th, 19:57.66).

"Haley Miller led our women's team with a top-10 finish," Brown added. "Tyler Owens also had a top-10 finish to lead our men to a successful day. We are looking forward to growing upon our performance for the season to come."

The Cougars are back in action next Friday at the Illinois State Invite in Normal, Illinois. The women's 5k will begin at 5:00 p.m. and the men's 8k race starts at 5:45 p.m.
