EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. - SIUE Head Volleyball Coach Leah Johnson announced her team's postseason awards at a recent banquet.

Senior Jessica Hemann was honored with the Cougar Pride Award which is voted on by members of the volleyball team. The award was presented in remembrance of former SIUE volleyball standout Kindra Westendorf.

"Jessica is a true ambassador of our program and University. She is an honest and generous person who daily upholds our values of respect, integrity, accountability, and commitment. She brought out the best in every person around her, from her teammates to our staff. She makes all of us strive to be our best," said Johnson.

Hemann and Sammi Minton were honored as the team captains.

Johnson said the general theme of the postseason banquet was about defining characteristics of a great team, honoring those qualities which attributed to the team's success during the 2011 season.

"Our staff felt that it was the ability of each individual to put the good of the team before themselves. They were the most open and accepting team I have ever had the pleasure to be around. They treat one another with the upmost respect. I believe it was these characteristics that provided our team cohesion and ensured our steady progress all season. We are so fortunate to have such wonderful young women in our program and representing our University," said Johnson.
