EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville volleyball coach Todd Gober has announced the signing of Candice Kummer (Vernon Hills) and Tiffany Turner (Mt. Pulaski).
Both signed national letters of intent to compete for the Cougars beginning with the 2006 season.
Kummer, a 6-foot-1 inch right side hitter, is left-handed and will be looking to compete for a starting position. She comes to SIUE from Stevenson High School and played club volleyball for Sky High.
"She has played at a very high standard at both the high school and club levels," said Gober.
Kummer was an honorable mention All-Area selection her senior season at Stevenson.
Turner, a 5-4 defensive specialist, has helped Mt. Pulaski High School to the state finals in two out of the last three seasons.
"I like her ball control and work ethic," said Gober. "She'll be competing for playing time immediately. We'll be strong at that position next season."
Turner, who plays club volleyball for Illini Elite, was named special mention All-State by the Champaign News-Gazette.
SIUE is coming off arguably its best-ever season as Great Lakes Valley Conference champions. The Cougars finished 28-6, reeling off a school-record 19 consecutive match victories. SIUE made its second-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament this past season.
