Cougars Post Strong Marks at Joey Haines Invite

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO. - The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's and men's track and field teams stepped out of their comfort zone at the Joey Haines Invitational.
Many of the Cougar runners competed in events which are not normally part of their regular routine. In all, SIUE finished with 10 performances that were personal bests and one by Aftan Noon which was among the school's fastest at 1,500 meters.
The SIUE men finished eighth at the meet with 44 points, Memphis won the meet with 146.5 points. The SIUE women placed eighth among 11 teams with 38 points. SIU Carbondale won the meet with 171.5 points.
Noon and Kayla Brown finished 1-2 in the 1,500-meter run. Noon won the event in 4 minutes, 38.30 seconds. That was five seconds off the school record of 4:33.63 set by Breanne Steffens in 2004. Brown, meanwhile, cross the finish line second in 4:42.68, also a personal best.
Kaleb Henry won the men's javelin with a throw of 193 feet, 7 inches. He outdistanced SIUC's Trevor Poore by more than three feet. Henry also placed seventh in the discus with a personal best of 163-3. That mark is just a foot short of the qualifying mark for U.S. Junior Nationals.
Mallory Dreyer tossed a personal best 122-2 in the javelin, placing sixth overall.
Megan Dennis took third in the triple jump with a leap of 39-9.75
Running into the wind, Chris Littleton ran 22.11 at 200 meters for a third-place finish. Bowman placed fourth in 22.21. Littleton also took third in the 400 in a time of 48.61.
Kaya Senaya posted a personal best in the 400 in 59.15, finishing ninth overall.
Colleen McDonough recorded two personal bests with throws of 117-9 in the discus and 143-0 in the hammer throw.
Eric Mammoser took sixth in the pole vault at 14-9. Teammate vaulted 12-6 for 14th place.
Ben Bishop tossed the shot put 52-9.25 and grabbed fifth place.
The Cougars now have one week off before traveling to Bowling Green, Ky., for the Hilltopper Relays..
