Harvey Qualifies for NCAA Championships

SACREMENTO, Calif. – Three SIUE track and field athletes competed in the first day of the NCAA Preliminary Round Thursday with senior Julian Harvey placing 3rd in the men's long jump.

Harvey's long jump of 25 feet, 8.75 inches was good for third place out of the 48-man field. He is now qualified for the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon, June 6-9.

Nick Matthews placed 36th in the men's hammer throw with a mark of 193-6. Matthews's terrific season ends after being the Ohio Valley Conference outdoor hammer throw champion.

Nichyria Byrd participated in the women's long jump and placed 42nd with a mark of 18-3.25. Byrd set the SIUE long jump school record this season as well as finishing third in the long jump at the OVC Championships.

The Cougars will be participating in one event at the NCAA Preliminaries Friday with Martinus Mitchell set to compete in the men's discus where he is seeded 41st.

Saturday, Mitchell will be throwing the shot put, Brittney Gibbs will be participating in the women's triple jump and Harvey will compete in the men's high jump.
