EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The SIUE track and field teams are set to compete in the Joey Haines Invitational in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Friday and Saturday. The Cougars also will take five athletes to compete in the 10K at the Washington University Invite Friday.
The Joey Haines Invitational will be comprised of top teams from around the region, including Marquette, Memphis, Middle Tennessee and Ohio Valley Conference foes UT Martin and Southeast Missouri.
The hammer throw is the only event scheduled for Friday. All other events begin Saturday morning.
"This is the point of the season where athletes have adjusted to the outdoor events," said SIUE Head Coach Scott Block. "We should begin to make big strides in our performances, and I am confident we will see more than a few personal bests this weekend."
SIUE will bring five long distance runners to compete in the 10K at the Washington University Invite Friday. Those athletes include Tyler Owens and Austin Woodard for the men and Jess Clarke, Allie Sweatt and Keri Burmester for the women. Also last weekend, Julian Harvey won the men's long jump with a leap of 24 feet, 7.75 inches. Harvey also ran a PR in the 100m with a time of 10.93. DeVonte Tincher placed 10th (10.99) in the 100m while also placing fifth in the men's 200m (22.28). Martinus Mitchell took third place (46.32 meters) for the Cougars in the men's discus.
