Cougars Claim Success at the John Craft Invite

CHARLESTON, Ill. – The SIUE track and field teams recorded 13 top-5 finishes and set multiple personal records at the John Craft Invite Saturday.

"The meet went great for us today," Head Coach Scott Block said. "We had a huge amount of personal and season bests and I am very pleased with that."

In the distance races, Aly Goff finished first and set a PR in the women's 800m (2:19.95). Allie Sweatt ran a PR in the mile (5:16.98) and Haley Miller finished second in the 3000m (10:31.49).

In the men's distance, Matthew O'Connor placed first in the 800m (1:55.72). In the mile, O'Connor placed second while running a PR (4:19.34). Also in the mile, Landon Skelly placed fourth (4:25.08) and Liam O'Connell ran a PR (4:35.97).

Nichyria Byrd finished first in the women's long jump (19-00) and Deborrah Blackburn placed third in the high jump (5-01.75).

Collin Brown had a big day for the Cougars. The freshmen placed first in the men's 400m (51.76) and fourth in the 200m (23.03). DeVonte Tincher finished fifth in the 60m with a time of 7.09.

SIUE dominated the throwing events Saturday. On the men's side, Nick Matthews finished first (61-01.25) and John Barnes placed second (57-11.75) in the weight throw. The women saw Clarie Nolan place first in the shot put (45-11.75) and Lizzie Virgl finished first in the weight throw (55-00.75).

"John (Barnes) had a fantastic meet today," Block added. "He is currently ranked third in the weight throw in the Ohio Valley Conference after only three meets with the event after coming over from wrestling last season."

The Cougars will be back in action Jan. 27 at the Top Times Open in Bloomington, Illinois.
