EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE track and field turned in a solid performance Friday at the Missouri Invitational as five individuals won their respective events.
"We got a lot accomplished this weekend," said SIUE Head Coach Scott Block. "We had solid performances all over the place, and I could not ask for more than that."
On the women's side, Nichyria Byrd leaped a personal best 19 feet, 2.75 inches in the long jump. Haley Miller added a victory in the mile. She defeated a field of 22 runners in a PR time of 5 minutes, 14.63 seconds.
On the men's side, Ben Scamihorn was victorious in the mile in 4:17.75. Matthew O'Connor bested a field of 21 runners in the 800 with a time of 1:56.18. Keith Meyer won for the second straight week in the 3,000 in a time of 8:28.45.
Julian Harvey also went head to head with former Cougar long jumper La'Derrick Ward. Ward won the battle by a quarter inch. Harvey set a season high at 25-4.5 and puts him at No. 6 in the nation.
"Julian showed up in a big way against his former teammate," said Block.
The Cougars also set a number of season bests, including on the women's events was Ivory Cassell (60, 8.11), Aleasha Jones (400, 1:00.27), Deborrah Blackburn (high jump, 5-3), Brittney Gibbs (triple jump, 40-5) and Claire Nolan (shot put, 46-0). The SIUE men also improved a number of season bests, including Julian Harvey (200, 22.77), the 4X400-meter relay team (3:30.70) and Mladen Hristov (triple jump, 47-2.25).
Block also noted some additional personal bests from Jess Clarke in the mile, Tyler Owens in the mile, Landon Skelly in the mile, Kevin Campbell in the 800, Scamihorn in the 800, Dalton Oakes in the 60 hurdles and Logan Webb in the triple jump.
