Cougars Volunteer at GO! St. Louis Marathon
ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Members of the SIUE track and field and cross country teams volunteered at the GO! St. Louis Marathon Sunday.
Battling windy conditions, the Cougars helped by handing out water and Gatorade to the competitors at the finish line.
"The wind wreaked havoc on our cup table several times, dousing us in Gatorade," said SIUE cross country Head CoachEileen McAllister. "Aside from the wind, the weather was great, and we had a lot of fun."
SIUE, helping for the second year at the event, was one of several track and cross country teams from the St. Louis area volunteering.
"It is such a large event and all of the many volunteers are crucial for it to be possible," added McAllister. "It brings a lot of people to the area, which is great for the local economy, and it encourages people to be active!"
The race ended a weekend of events allowing people from all walks of life to participate. There were runners and walkers of all abilities, including a blind runner, which amazed all those involved.
SIUE alumni Kelly Flounders and Lindsey Mulvey both ran the half marathon. It was a first for Mulvey, and Flounders ran a personal best. Richard Werths, father of current Cougar runner Aaron Werths and former runner Steve Werths, also completed the race.
