GUADALAJARA, Mexico - SIUE graduate Alicia DeShasier won a gold medal for Team USA in the javelin Thursday at the 2011 Pan American Games from Telemex Athletic Stadium.
"The experience here in Guadalajara was awesome," DeShasier said. "The opportunity to represent the USA and then throwing a personal record at an international meet is a great feeling."
DeShasier, a former softball and track and field standout for the Cougars, threw a personal best 190 feet, 4 inches (58.01 meters) to finish first in an impressive field. She placed ahead of Cuba's Yainelis Ribiaux (184-5) and Yanet Cruz (184-4.25) the silver and bronze medalists, respectively.
"I wasn't sure what to expect from the other competitors since this meet was so late in the season, so I focused on my own preparation and personal goals," DeShasier added. "My goals going into the meet were to make the finals and throw close to my PR."
The Carrollton native has her sights set on a spot with the U.S. team for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
