EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. - The Southern Illinois University men's and women's track and field teams close out the 2010 indoor season at the GVSU Big Meet in Grand Rapids, Mich., this Friday and Saturday.
Teams that are expected to participate in the "Big Meet" include Western Kentucky, SIU Carbondale, Western Michigan, Michigan State, Michigan, Purdue, and Illinois.
"This meet is going to be a great competition for our team," SIUE Interim Head Coach Kareem Jackson said. "I want the team to continue to work hard during the meet and finish the indoor season strong."
Aftan Noon (Forsyth) is coming off a season-best 800-meter event with a time of 2 minutes, 14.81 seconds at the McDonald's Classic.
Kaya Senaya (Milwaukee, Wis.) enters the weekend after a season-best 25.86 in the 200-meter dash.
SIUE will also look for big things from the 1,600-meter relay comprised of Noon, Megan Dennis (Country Club Hills), Michelle Higgins (Aurora), and Elisha Crawley (Decatur). The relay team set a new season best of 4:04.92 at the McDonald's Invite.
Ben Bishop (Cantrall) continues to post top performances in the weight throw, having won the event in five meets. He is coming off a first-place finish with a 66 feet, 8.5 inch throw.
Jesse Holliger (Bloomington) will participate in the 800-meter run after he posted a season-best 1:58.46 last weekend. Marc Amarillas (Quincy) will run in the 3,000 meter run. Amarillas enters this weekend's meet after an 8:56.32 season best.
"We have shown resiliency this season when we have had some struggles during a meet," Jackson said. "Our coaching staff has done an outstanding job preparing their athletes for competition."
