Cougars Claim Success at SIUE Fall Invite

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE women's tennis had an impressive season opener with multiple top three finishes, including a 1st place finish by Ann-Christine Link.

In A doubles, Morgan Steffes and Lara Tupper of SIUE won their quarterfinal matchup 6-3 against Eastern Illinois. The duo then lost to Saint Louis in the semi-finals. In the 3rd place game, Steffes and Tupper lost 2-6 against EIU.

In B doubles, Callaghan Adams of SIUE teamed up with Alba Salinas from Saint Louis. They lost in the quarterfinals, but won the consolation final 7-6 over a duo from Bradley and Western Illinois.

"We were in three singles finals today," Head Coach Nick Mueller said. "We claimed first in one, and were within two points of winning the other."

Steffes was the lone participant in A singles for the Cougars. Steffes won her quarterfinals matchup in three sets against EIU 6-4, 4-6, 10-8. She then went on to beat Saint Louis in the semi-finals 6-0, 6-2. In the A finals Steffes matched up against Cassie McKenzie of Saint Louis. Steffes ended up placing 2nd after McKenzie won 1-6, 6-2, 10-8.

In B singles, Link took home 1st place for the Cougars after defeating EIU in the quarterfinals, WIU in the semi-finals and Emily Pugachevsky of EIU 6-3, 6-2 in the final. Also in B singles, Adams lost her quarterfinals and consolation semi-final matchups, but defeated Srishti Slaria of EIU in the 7th place game.

Tupper and Raillane Kamdem both participated in C singles for SIUE. Tupper finished 2nd after defeating EIU in the quarterfinals and SLU in the semi-finals, but eventually falling to Karla Contreras of EIU 3-6, 6-2, 12-10 in the final. Kamdem lost her quarterfinal matchup to SLU, but defeated WIU in the consolation semi-final. Kamdem fell to Bradley in the consolation final.

"I am very proud of our team for battling today," Mueller added. "It was a very good effort by everyone."

The Cougars are back in action Oct. 6-7 at the Western Kentucky Invite.
