SIUE Tennis Earns Spot in OVC Tournament

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The SIUE men's and women's tennis teams qualified for the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament for the first time and will begin postseason play Thursday in Paducah, Ky.

The three-day event will take place at the Heflin Tennis Center.

"We're excited to be in the postseason," said SIUE Head Coach Jason Coomer. "We are looking forward to the opportunity to represent our University, our city, and our alumni at the OVC Championships. Edwardsville is such a great tennis community, and our program has a tremendous amount of tradition."

The SIUE men's team earned the No. 4 seed in the tournament and will play Morehead State at 10 a.m. The Cougars completed the regular season with an 11-9 record and a 5-4 mark in OVC play.

Third-seeded Austin Peay will take on sixth-seeded Eastern Illinois in the other tournament quarterfinal match.

With a win Thursday, SIUE would play top-seeded Jacksonville State in a 10 a.m. match Friday with the winner advancing to Saturday's final. The other semifinal match pits Belmont against the winner of the Austin Peay-Eastern Illinois match.

The SIUE women's tennis team, which finished the regular season with a 12-8 record and a 7-3 mark in OVC play, also advanced to the tournament as the No. 4 seed and will play UT Martin in the opening round at 2 p.m. SIUE enters the tournament as the league's hottest team with a six-match winning streak. The winner of the SIUE-UT Martin tilt moves on to play top-seeded Murray State in a 2 p.m. matchup Friday.

Third-seeded Morehead State takes on Eastern Illinois in the other Thursday quarterfinal women's match. That winner faces off against second-seeded Eastern Kentucky Friday at 2 p.m. hoping for a berth in the championship match.

"Both teams have shown they are quite capable of playing at a level that will allow them to play beyond this tournament," said Coomer. "We are going to approach this week's tournament as three one-day events. What we have done previously has no bearing whether it is positive or negative. All we can focus on is winning three dual matches in three days."
