EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The Ohio Valley Conference schedule begins Saturday for the SIUE women's tennis team against defending league champions Eastern Kentucky.
EKU, 4-7 overall and 1-0 in the OVC, was the league's preseason favorite and enters the weekend with a 23-match winning streak in OVC regular season play. The Cougars and the Colonels are scheduled to start at 9 a.m. CT.
"When you play at the Division I level, you want to play against the best," said SIUE Head Coach Jason Coomer. "Eastern Kentucky demonstrated last year they were a quality team, making the NCAA Tournament. This is a great opportunity for our girls to go out early in the season and make their presence known."
SIUE, 5-5 overall, follows the EKU match up with 1 p.m. CT match Sunday at Morehead State, 3-8 overall.
The Cougars will be looking to bounce back after going 1-2 on its most recent road trip that featured three matches in Mississippi and Louisiana.
"We have to have short memories," said Coomer. "While we lost our last match (4-3 to New Orleans), that match very easily could have gone either way. We have had a good few days of practice leading into this weekend. That's what we are going to need heading into Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State."
Coomer said he is excited for this road trip.
"We are going to have to play very tough, smart, and disciplined tennis this weekend. I know we are very capable of doing that because I have seen that already this season," he added.
