EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE women's tennis won four of six singles matches Saturday to win its spring season home opener with a 4-3 victory over Evansville at the Edwardsville YMCA.

Haley Ilcewicz picked up the decisive point for the Cougars at No. 6 singles. She provided the Cougars' biggest win of the night with a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Evansville's Mina Milovic.

Ilcewicz and Milovic were the last players to start, having to wait until the first singles match was completed. Having to wait for her turn to start is nothing new for Ilcewicz.

"She has been in that position before. She came in ready to play. That was an upper-classman move on her part," said SIUE Assistant Coach Amanda Pratzel.

Ilcewicz said she went into the match looking to be the aggressor from the opening serve.

"I knew the match was going to be tight so I wanted to play my best in case it came down to me," said Ilcewicz.

After SIUE lost two of three doubles matches, the team needed a lift in singles.

After Evansville made it 2-0 with a win at No. 5 singles by Kelsey Costales, Kali Donner earned SIUE's first point of the match with a win at No. 4 singles over Andjela Brguljan 6-2, 6-2.

"I wanted to come out with as much energy as I could," said Donner.

Pratzel said Donner's play got the Cougars headed in the right direction.

"Kali went in there with confidence. She didn't slow down," said Pratzel.

SIUE freshmen Mia Frogner and Lexi Aranda also picked up victories for the Cougars at No. 3 and No. 1 singles, respectively. Aranda won the only three-set match of the evening, a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 triumph over Evansville's Marketa Trousilova.

"Lexi is a fighter. She won't step off the court until she gets the result she wants," Pratzel said.

SIUE improved to 4-2 overall while Evansville dropped to 0-5.

The Cougars next play at Saint Louis in a 4 p.m. match this coming Friday.
