"Once this team learns to focus each and every time they step out onto the court, they will find themselves with many more successful days like today," said SIUE Head Coach Jason Coomer.
SIUE opened the day with three straight victories in doubles. SIUE's Sierra Halverson and Lexi Aranda defeated Iowa's Annette Dohanics and Caitlin Hindmarsh 8-3. SIUE's Monique Krutak and Mia Frogner edged the Iowa duo of Katie Zordani and Aimee Tarun with an 8-7 (1) win. SIUE's Kali Donner and McKenzie Thomas added an 8-1 triumph over Bradley's Cassia Wojtalik and Monique Graf.
"We stressed the importance of getting off to quick starts, and our women certainly achieved that goal today," Coomer said.
All five SIUE's victories in singles were in straight sets. Aranda, Frogner, Krutak, Halverson, and Donner earned wins for the Cougars.
SIUE finished up play Friday by winning two of three more doubles matches. The Cougars won 10 of 11 contested matches for the day.
"I thought our level of focus was as high as it has been all season," said Coomer.
Play continues Saturday and Sunday at the Drake Jamboree. "I expect it to be as tough or tougher than what we encountered today," added Coomer.
