NORMAN, Okla. – SIUE women's tennis opened day one of the USTA/ITA Central Regional Championships with four singles victories.
SIUE women's tennis Assistant Coach Amanda Pratzel said the Cougars played well in day one but were unable to add any more players to the main singles draw. Monique Krutak will be SIUE's competitor in the singles main draw at the Headington Family Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Oklahoma.
"I think, all in all, everyone got a taste of some of the top players in the region if not the country," Pratzel said.
Tournament officials were hoping to move forward with the main singles draw Friday but shared with coaches their plan to play the doubles draw if expected rain showers hampered play.
"We're not that far behind talent-wise," said Pratzel. "We just have to work on the things needed to get to the next level."
Aranda, a freshman, picked up a big win in the singles qualifying with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Minnesota senior Yuliana Umanets.
Frogner, also a freshman, defeated Oklahoma State freshman Mariah Burke 6-5, 6-1.
Halverson dispatched Wichita State's Whitley Quan 6-1, 6-3.
McKenzie Thomas also defeated Western Illinois' Elena Berdichevsky in consolation play.
