NORMAN, Okla. – SIUE women's tennis continues the 2013 fall schedule as it travels for the USTA/ITA Central Regional Tournament.
The tournament begins Thursday at the Headington Family Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Oklahoma.
A total of 139 players from 22 schools will be vying for the singles title. Schools joining SIUE are Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas State, Wichita State, Nebraska, South Dakota State, Oklahoma State, Kansas, SIU Carbondale, Kansas City, Minnesota, Arkansas, Iowa, Iowa State, Tulsa, Arkansas State, Western Illinois, Central Arkansas, Saint Louis, Bradley, and Oral Roberts.
McKenzie Thomas, Sierra Halverson, Lexi Aranda, Kali Donner, and Mia Frogner will be among the competitors who begin Thursday with qualifying matches. Successful qualifiers will play in the main draw which opens Friday.
"Our expectation in the qualifying draw is to go in there and qualify for the main draw," said SIUE Assistant Coach Amanda Pratzel.
SIUE's Monique Krutak, who has a 4-1 singles record so far this fall, will be among the players already set in the main draw.
SIUE also has two teams in the main draw of the doubles competition. They are Aranda and Halverson as well as Frogner and Donner.
"We're going to be playing against some of the top players in the region and in the country. Every win will be big for us," said Pratzel.
The singles and doubles champions will be determined Monday. The winners receive an automatic bid to the National Indoor Intercollegiate Tournament at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. Nov. 7-10.
