Cougars Lead the Way

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE women's tennis logged a 12-2 singles record on the opening day of the SIUE Fall Invitational.

SIUE welcomed Butler, Eastern Illinois, and Evansville for the two-day event. The Cougars were dominant on day one of play. Ten of SIUE's 12 singles victories were in straight sets. SIUE was a perfect 3-0 in its first doubles matches of the tournament.

"One of the things we asked the women to do was to come out today aggressive. I think we accomplished that," said SIUE Head Coach Jason Coomer.

Playing the No. 6 flight, sophomore Sierra Halverson yielded just one game in her two victories.

"Sierra continues to have a strong fall for us," Coomer said. "She is extremely talented and is starting to put it all together on the court. We look forward to watching her progress as a player."

The Cougars also picked up two singles victories each from Lexi Aranda in the No. 2 flight, Mia Frogner in the No. 4 flight, Haley Ilcewicz in the No. 5 flight, and McKenzie Thomas in the No. 7 flight.

"It's good to get off to a good start, but this is only day one," Coomer said. "I fully expect our women to come into day two with a high level of focus and intensity.
