Women’s Tennis Earns First OVC Win

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The SIUE women's tennis team picked up its first Ohio Valley Conference victory of the season Sunday night, knocking off Southeast Missouri 4-3 at the Edwardsville YMCA.

The Cougars got singles victories from Monique Krutak, Haley Ilcewicz, and McKenzie Thomas.  The doubles tandems of Krutak and Ilcewicz along with Kali Donner and Sierra Halverson also earned wins to give the vital doubles point to SIUE.

"It was nice to get off to a fast start in doubles this evening," Head Coach Jason Coomer said.  "Our doubles play continues to improve.  We're still not where we need to be, but we're making progress."

Krutak, Ilcewicz, and Thomas all won their singles matches in straight sets.  Krutak, the reigning OVC Player of the Week, knocked off Heather Robinson 7-5, 6-2.

Ilcewicz and Thomas then followed suit by defeating Melissa Martin (6-0, 6-1) and Lauren Schaper (6-0, 6-2), respectively.  Thomas' win clinched the match for the Cougars.

"Haley had a great weekend, it was good to see her bounce back from a hard-fought victory Saturday and continue her dominance," Coomer added.  "McKenzie really stepped up for us also.  It's nice to see her playing at a high level."

The Cougars are now 5-8 overall and 1-1 in OVC play.  Next up are three straight home matches for SIUE, beginning with a visit from Eastern Illinois Thursday at 2 p.m.

"The team played well this weekend," Coomer said.  "We played against two teams that were both picked ahead of us in the preseason rankings and saw some good results.  We'll need to continue playing at a high level as we prepare for three matches this week."
