Cougars Overpower Grambling State
Feb. 11, 2012
MONROE, La. - Lindsey Barron and Chelsea Yankolovich each finished with four hits Saturday as SIUE downed Grambling State 12-2 at the Mardi Gras Classic.
SIUE's second game Saturday, originally scheduled for 7 p.m. against IUPUI, was called off due to weather concerns after tournament play was more than two hours behind. Temperatures dove into the 30s in Monroe.
SIUE, 2-1, will play its final game of the tournament at 9 a.m. Sunday against IUPUI.
On Saturday, the top of the order led the Cougars. Barron and Yankolovich not only combined for eight hits but also accounted for seven runs scored and five runs batted in.
The No. 3 hitter in the lineup, Alex McDavid, finished 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs.
SIUE finished with 17 hits against the Tigers, which dropped to 0-3.
"We were swinging the bats well today," said SIUE Head Coach Sandy Montgomery.
Lindsey Coleman picked up her first pitching victory of the season. The Cougar junior had a no-hitter going through five innings. She finished the game with five strikeouts allowing five hits in six innings of work.
Montgomery said the Cougars are more offensive-minded this season. All three SIUE freshmen - Kam Smallwood, Brittany Toney, and Rebecca Gray - who came to the plate against Grambling State recorded a hit.
"Once again, our freshman all had hits. We're getting a lot of contributions. I have some options I can use off the bench.
