MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – SIUE softball improved to 5-3 Friday with a split of its first two games at the EMU Madeira Beach Spring Invitational.
SIUE blanked Central Arkansas 4-0 and then dropped a 5-4 contest to Seton Hall.
In game one, Alyssa Heren and Zoe Schafer each homered and drove in two runs. Heren hit a solo homer in the third inning and added an RBI single in the seventh after a triple by Alana Cobb-Adams. Schafer hit a two-run homer in the fifth.
"Central Arkansas is a good team," noted SIUE Head Coach Sandy Montgomery. "They're going to beat some teams."
Emily Ingles ran her record to 3-1 with her second shutout of the season. She scattered five hits and struck out three.
In the nightcap, Seton Hall scored all five of its runs in the first inning, four of which came off a grand slam by Destini Peck.
"We had a scratch and claw or way back into the game," said Montgomery.
SIUE mounted a comeback in the fourth and fifth innings with two runs in each inning. A Tess Eby double drove home one run in the fourth as well as a Seton Hall passed ball.
In the fifth, Bailley Concatto walked with the bases loaded, and Schafer added a sacrifice fly.
Corrinna Rivas went the distance in the circle and took her first loss. She is now 1-1.
"We had several opportunities, and we didn't execute," added Montgomery.
SIUE returns to play Saturday at Villanova. Game time is 10 a.m. CT.
