ST. LOUIS, Mo. – SIUE won both of its fall season-opening contests Saturday, defeating Washington University 8-3 and Saint Louis 4-3.

The Cougars will be back in action Sunday with a pair of games at Cougar Field. SIUE faces Wabash Valley at 2 p.m. and Lindenwood-Belleville at 4 p.m. Wabash Valley and Lindenwood-Belleville take the field first at noon.

Zoe Schafer hit the second of her two home runs on the day in the top of the seventh against Saint Louis. Her homer to right field capped off a good offensive performance for the Cougars.

"Our pitchers threw well today," said Schafer. "There were a few bumps for us, but the offense put up double-digit hits in both games, which is huge."

SIUE freshman pitcher Corrina Rivas collected the victory in the nightcap over Saint Louis. Ashley Koziol earned the win over Washington (Mo.) with one inning of relief from Emily Ingles.

The Cougars rapped 11 hits in each game.

SIUE Head Coach Sandy Montgomery was pleased with the Cougars' efforts.

"I was happy overall," said Montgomery. "We have to work on our execution and understanding the game at a higher level."
