EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE softball Head Coach Sandy Montgomery announced the 2017 fall schedule Wednesday that includes eight contests.
After advancing to the championship game of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament for an unprecedented four consecutive seasons, SIUE will have a fresh, new look on the field.
"We lost a good nucleus of our starting lineup so we've got to see where players are going to fit and who is going to step up into a starting role," said Montgomery.
SIUE has all but one fall date at Cougar Field. The Cougars begin the fall season with two games in St. Louis Sept. 30 against Washington (Mo.) and Saint Louis.
The home fall schedule features three dates in October. On Oct. 1, SIUE welcomes Wabash Valley and Lindenwood-Belleville. The Cougars meet Saint Louis Community College at Meramec and Parkland College in back-to-back contests Oct. 7.
The fall finale is Oct. 14 with a doubleheader against Lakeland. Coach Montgomery also welcomes back the 2007 SIUE national champion team that day as it will be inducted into the SIUE Athletics Hall of Fame later that evening.
Montgomery explained that the hard work and development over the next few months will determine the starting lineup for the spring season.
"The better they play and perform in the fall, the more opportunities they will get going into the spring," she added.
SIUE has 14 players returning from last season's 41-win season.
"Hopefully our returners have worked on areas they need to improve upon during the summer," said Montgomery.
"I want them to compete for playing time and figure out our systems," Montgomery said. "All four of our freshmen are very talented individuals. I'm looking forward to getting them on the field and seeing what they can do."
