PREVIEW: Softball Travels to Arizona State

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – A week after getting its 2014 season underway, the SIUE softball team will travel to Tempe, Ariz., for five games at the Arizona State Littlewood Classic.

"We're looking forward to this weekend without question," Head Coach Sandy Montgomery said.  "To play three top 10 teams early in the season is outstanding.  The kids are excited about it, but we have to take it one game at a time and keep things in perspective."

The Cougars, 0-4, will open play Friday with a matchup against Michigan State at 2:30 p.m. CT, before facing No. 5 Arizona State at 9:15 p.m.

Play resumes Saturday as SIUE takes on No. 7 Oklahoma at 12:15 p.m., along with No. 3 Washington at 7 p.m.

The Cougars wrap up the weekend's action with a game against in-state opponent Illinois State Sunday at 10 a.m.  All five of SIUE's games will be played at Alberta B. Farrington Softball Stadium.

"We play Michigan State first so they're our priority right now," Montgomery said.  "It will be an enormous challenge, but we're looking forward to it."

SIUE began its season with four games at the LSU Tiger Classic in Baton Rouge, La., last weekend.

The Cougars had strong pitching performances from Haley Chambers in narrow 2-1 defeats against Oklahoma State and Central Arkansas.

Outfielder Brittany Toney led the Cougars offensively, posting a team-high four hits to go with two doubles and an RBI.
