EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE softball Head Coach Sandy Montgomery has her team focused as they enter the weekend with a pair of doubleheaders.
The Cougars, 31-8 overall and 14-2 in the Ohio Valley Conference, start the weekend with a 14-game winning streak, the third-longest in the nation.
SIUE takes on Tennessee Tech, 19-21 overall and 8-6 in the OVC, for a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday. On Sunday, the Cougars entertain Jacksonville State, 24-19 overall and 9-7 in the OVC, for a 1 p.m. doubleheader. Tennessee Tech and Jacksonville State enter the weekend with the second and the third best OVC records in the East Division.
The Cougars are one-half game out of the top spot in the OVC West Division and have the same number of conference losses as Eastern Illinois. SIUE also can clinch its second-ever appearance in the OVC Softball Championships this weekend.
Montgomery said she has focused her team on understanding playing one game at a time rather than looking too far ahead.
"I've said one game at a time, and they have bought into it," Montgomery said. "Even though they are very young, they are very focused and very mature."
SIUE has the top offense among OVC teams in league contests with an average of better than seven runs per game.
Brittany Toney and Alex McDavid are two of the top four players in league games. Toney, a sophomore right fielder, is batting .545 (24-44) in OVC games. McDavid, a sophomore third baseman, is batting .463 with an OVC-leading 27 runs batted in during league contests.
