Cougars Travel to Red & Black Tournament

Feb. 24, 2011

EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville travels to its third of four tournaments this spring. On Friday, SIUE begins play in the Red & Black Tournament.

SIUE, 3-6, opens the tournament Friday at 11 a.m. ET against Boston University (0-0). The Cougars play host Louisville (5-5) at 1 p.m. SIUE has one game at 4 p.m. Saturday against Miami (Ohio) (3-2). SIUE has two games scheduled for Sunday, facing Miami (Ohio) a second time at 10 a.m. followed by Wright State (4-0) at noon.

All five games will be broadcast live on WSIE FM 88.7 with Joe Pott providing the play-by-play.

SIUE Head Coach Sandy Montgomery said the Cougars have to produce and be consistent in all three phases of the game - pitching, hitting, and fielding.

"Our goal this weekend is to play better than last weekend," she said. "I'm happy with where we are at. They are in a good place mentally."

SIUE freshman Rachel Coonrod leads the starters in hitting with a .364 average. Coonrod and sophomore Taylor Tooley have a team-leading eight hits. Coonrod hit her first collegiate home run against Tennessee this past weekend.

The SIUE pitching staff holds a 4.96 earned run average heading into the weekend. All three pitchers (Erika Taylor, Lindsey Coleman, and Ali Downing) have a victory each.

Three teams in this tournament (Boston, Louisville, and Wright State) played in the NCAA Championships last season. This will be a test for the Cougars.

"We need to focus on the task in hand and try to play the best that we can on the given day," Montgomery added.

GAME NOTES:

  • Erika Taylor collected her 50th career victory in the shutout win last weekend against UNLV. Taylor is tied for ninth on the all-time wins list with Deanna Smith (1995-98). With one more win, she will be tied for eighth with former All-American Sabra McCune (2006-2007).
  • Taylor needs six strikeouts for 500 career Ks. She would be the third player in school history to pass that mark after Kaitlin Colosimo (715 from 2006-2009) and Sandy Montgomery (659 from 1982-1985)
  • Head Coach Sandy Montgomery recently collected her 800th victory. It was a 6-2 win against Campbell University on Feb. 12.
  • Three players have now played 100 or more games for the Cougars. They are senior Kasey Schlafke (148), Whitney Davis (101), and Lindsey Barron (100). Other than Coonrod, who has now played a total of nine games as a Cougar, Davis is the only other player with a career batting average better than .300 (at .302).
  • Schlafke leads the team with 12 career home runs. She is 14th on the all-time list. Schlafke also has been hit by a pitch 12 times, which is fourth all-time.
  • Schlafke, Tooley and freshman Chelsea Yankolovich are the only players who have started all nine games this season.
    NEXT WEEKEND
SIUE takes a quick break Thursday from tournament play for a single game at Missouri State. Game time is 4 p.m. SIUE travels to sister school Southern Illinois University Carbondale for the Coach B Classic next Saturday and Sunday. The schedule doesn't get any easier for the Cougars at the tournament where SIUE plays Purdue, Kentucky, Wright State, and host Southern Illinois.
