Lakers Upset Top-Seeded Cougars

         EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. -- Elizabeth's Smith's two-out RBI single in the eighth inning lifted No. 8 seed Grand Valley State past Southern Illinois University Edwardsville 3-2 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament at Cougar Field Thursday.
         Top-seeded SIUE will play No. 4 seed Lewis in an elimination game tomorrow at 11 a.m. The Flyers fell to Northern Kentucky 2-1 Thursday.

         Shanna Waldo went 2-4 for Cougars with a pair of RBIs in the contest.
         The fourth-ranked Cougars fall to 46-9, while the Lakers improve to 35- 19 on the year.
         Grand Valley State gained a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on a RBI single by Elizabeth Smith. Smith was 2-3 with two RBIs.
         The Cougars rallied in the bottom of the fifth inning as Waldo delivered an two-out two-run RBI single, giving SIUE a 2-1 advantage. Kaeleigh Rousey and Courtney Mall scored on the play.
         The Lakers tied the game in the sixth inning a Kristen Moleski doubled to right field and then scored on a throwing error by Alicia DeShasier in right field.
         Lisa Preuss began the eighth inning with a walk. Preuss advanced to second base on a sacrafice bunt. DeShasier made a running one-handed catch at the warning track for the second out, but Preuss tagged up and went to third. After a walk to Crista Buresh, Elizabeth Smith came through with the game- winning hit.
         Sabra McCune took the loss for SIUE, going the distance giving up two earned runs on five hits. For the first time this season, McCune (27-7) had more walks (5) than strikouts (4) in a contest.
         Lori Andjelich improved to 16-10 on the year, not allowing an earned run on four hits with one walk.
         Moleski was 1-1 in the game with two runs scored.
