MARTIN, Tenn. – The SIUE women's soccer team lost to UT Martin in double-overtime 3-2 from a 106th minute winner from the Skyhawks.
"It's a tough one to lose," Head Coach Derek Burton said. "We battled back twice and I thought we would get that winner."
The first half saw both teams execute attacks, with the Skyhawks finding the net first. In the 22nd minute Amy McGivern put in a free kick from five yards outside the box.
Just 30 seconds later, Caroline Hoefert stole a pass, dribble passed the keeper and slotted it home.
The first half saw the Cougars outshoot the Skyhawks 9-8.
UTM didn't take long after half to score their second goal. In the 51st minute, Alice Adams tucked one away after a deflection off of a Juli Rossi save.
In the 63rd minute, The Cougars tied things up with a Peyton Roehnelt goal. Roehnelt netted a free kick from a few yards outside the box.
The Skyhawks had 15 shots in the second half.
In the first overtime, UTM took six shots to SIUE's zero.
The Skyhawks won in walk-off fashion in the 106th minute when Alice Adams scored her second goal of the night off of one-on-one with Rossi.
Rossi finished the game with 12 saves for the Cougars, including multiple acrobatic saves. Hoefert finished with three shots and MacKenzie Litzsinger shot four times for SIUE.
"We played well tonight, but a couple times our awareness level wasn't quite there and it cost us against a very hungry team," Burton added.
Burton on moving forward from this loss.
"Although tonight stings, I do have a ton of confidence in this team," he said. "This is a group with experienced seniors leading us who will be prepared to give it everything on Sunday."
The Cougars (6-7-2, 4-3-1 OVC) are back on the road Sunday when they travel to Southeast Missouri for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
