CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – SIUE women's soccer falls to Austin Peay 2-1 after giving up two goals off penalty kicks.
"I'm very proud of our effort tonight," Head Coach Derek Burton said. "The team gave it everything, and because of that we gave ourselves a chance to win the game."
The Governors struck in the 23rd minute after Jennifer Smith slotted home the first penalty shot.
The Cougars had four shots in the first half.
Austin Peay's Kirsten Robertson scored on the second penalty kick in the 67th minute.
The Cougars tried to make things interesting late when Krista McMahan scored her first goal of the season in the 88th minute.
"This can be a cruel game at times," Burton added. "We didn't give up a shot on goal but still lost. That's a tough one to take, but we can certainly take many things from this game."
"We are looking forward to the next opportunity to line up and play," Burton said.
SIUE is back at home next Friday when they host Morehead State at 7 p.m.
