Cougars Earn First OVC Win

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - SIUE women's soccer earned its first Ohio Valley Conference win Sunday afternoon, defeating Tennessee Tech 3-1 at Korte Stadium.

"It's great to get the first conference win under our belt and not have that hanging over our heads any longer," SIUE Head Coach Derek Burton said. "The girls did a great job of carrying out what we asked them to do, which was pick up where we left off in the second half Friday."

The win, the first home win of the year for SIUE, improves the Cougars to 3-3-1 and 1-1 in the OVC. Tennessee Tech drops to 3-8-1 and 0-2 in the OVC.

Michelle Auer got the Cougars on the board in the 16th minute. Auer got a pass from Rachel Brcic, made a cut at the top of the box and struck a right foot shot past Tech goalkeeper Becca Toler to make it 1-0.

Meagan Iffrig made it 2-0 just about 8 minutes later, taking advantage of a Tennessee Tech defensive miscue. The Golden Eagles failed to clear a ball following an SIUE corner kick. Iffrig collected the ball, again at the top of the box, and hit a shot over Toler for the 2-0 SIUE advantage. The Cougars took the lead into halftime.

Brcic added a goal of her own in the 61st minute. The goal, again, came off a corner kick by the Cougars. After the initial restart, Allie Brazill found Brcic, who was able to beat Toler from six yards away to extend SIUE's lead to 3-0.

"What I told the team at halftime was to keep the foot to the pedal, keep applying the pressure, and hopefully get the third goal, which we did," Burton said.

Tennessee Tech tallied its only goal 25 seconds later. Kerri Reid scored her third goal of the year from 18 yards out, for the final score.

SIUE outshot Tennessee Tech 17-9. Toler made just a single save in the match for the Golden Eagles, while Claire Lovercheck recorded four for SIUE.

The Cougars now embark on their first conference road trip. SIUE will play at UT Martin Friday before traveling to SEMO for a Sunday afternoon contest.

"We will get on the road and play some teams we have played before and are more familiar with," Burton added. "It will be tough to win on the road but we will do our best."
