Cougars Fall to Austin Peay on Senior Day

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.-Austin Peay scored a pair of first half goals Sunday afternoon and held on for a 2-1 win over SIUE women's soccer on Senior Day at Korte Stadium.

The Cougars finished the 2010 season with a record of 8-7-1, including a 5-3 mark at home. SIUE Head Coah Derek Burton said the team should be happy with the season they have had.

"While the outcome of today's game is disappointing. In total we can be happy and hold our heads high," he said.

"We definitely showed progression from the previous year," Burton continued. "Everyone involved can be proud of what we did this year."

Austin Peay, which advances to the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, finished the regular season with a 13-5-1 record.

The Lady Govs took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute. Following a corner kick, Natalia Ariza found sister Tatiana Ariza who beat Cougars' goalkeeper Claire Lovercheck to the far post. The goal was the ninth of the season for Tatiana Ariza, who came into the game second in the OVC in scoring.

Natalia Ariza made it 2-0 in favor of Austin Peay in the 25th minute with a penalty kick. It is only the second penalty kick allowed this season by the Cougars.

APSU, which outshot SIUE 5-4 in the first half, led 2-0 at halftime. The Cougars outshot Austin Peay 14-10 over the course of the game. SIUE took 10 of its shots during the second half.

All 10 of the Lady Govs' shots were on goal. Lovercheck made eight saves for the Cougars, one short of her season-high.

"Claire has been great all year. She has had an outstanding junior year," Burton said. "We feel good going into next year having someone with experience."

Senior Chelsey Johnston assured that the Cougars wouldn't be shutout on Senior Day. Johnston took a through ball from fellow senior Ashley Davidson then touched it past Austin Peay goalkeeper Haylee Shoaff with just 12 seconds showing on the game clock. The goal was the second of the year for Johnston and the sixth of her Cougar career.

"I feel great that Chelsey got a goal at the end," Burton said, "But it turned out to be too little, too late."
