MURRAY, Ky. - Georgia State's Sarah Bennett scored twice in the first half to help the Panthers to a 2-0 victory over Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in the opening game of the Hampton Inn Classic.
The Cougars were held without a goal for the second straight game. SIUE women's soccer coach Derek Burton said the Cougars' Achilles heel has been allowing early goals.
"It was a tale of two halves," said Burton. "We dominated the second half."
Georgia State goalkeeper Heidi Blankenship recorded a shutout. She collected fives saves. Burton said one shot was swiped off the line at the last second and another hit the post.
SIUE goalkeeper Claire Lovercheck was back in goal after suffering an injury during the preseason. She collected two saves.
"We have to find the net and break the ice," said Burton.
The Cougars play once more at the Hampton Inn Classic with a 2:30 p.m. contest with host Murray State University. Murray State is a future Ohio Valley Conference opponent.
