Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's basketball coach Wendy Hedberg is looking forward to her team's regular season opener with Robert Morris on Tuesday night.
The Cougars will open with the Lady Eagles at 7 p.m. at the Vadalabene Center.
"Hopefully we can get out the gates early," said Hedberg. "Just pick things up a little bit and get the team going."
SIUE follows the contest with the Robert Morris up with a contest against Saginaw Valley on Saturday at 1 p.m.
"Both games are at home and that is nice," said Hedberg. "It is an early matchup with a GLIAC team which is big."
The Cougars ended the preseason with a 0-2 mark, dropping games at Southeast Missouri State and Bradley. SIUE fell to the Braves 79-54 last Saturday.
"I thought at times we played well," said Hedberg. "There were bright spots to the game. We shot the ball better."
Whitney Sykes (Pontoon Beach) led all Cougars with 17 points against the Braves. Sykes connected on 6-12 of her shots from the field and 3 for 7 from behind the three-point line. Tanya Guell (Plymouth, Wis.) netted 12 points adding four rebounds.
"Tanya shot the ball well, and Whitney was her usual self," said Hedberg.
Krystal Rosengren (Marseilles), a 6-foot-3-inch center, notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
"Krystal played well," said Hedberg. "She continues to get better each game. She does a lot of nice things."
