Dec. 31, 2009
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's Raven Berry hit all eight of her shots in the second half, but Central Arkansas pulled out a 64-59 victory Thursday at the Vadalabene Center.
Berry finished with 20 points for the Cougars, which fell to 2-12. Ashley Bey was the only other Cougar in double figures with 11 points. Bey also added five assists and five steals for SIUE.
"I was happy that we were able to keep the score lower and gave our self a chance to win," said SIUE Coach Amanda Levens.
Central Arkansas, now 9-3, countered with a 21-point, 18-rebound effort from Megan Herbert. The Sugar Bears also got a lift off the bench with five second-half three-pointers from Westin Taylor.
The Cougars led by seven at halftime but had their lead chipped away as Central Arkansas improved its shooting from the first half to the second half. SIUE's defense held Central Arkansas to 24.1 percent shooting in the first half. The Sugar Bears followed that up by hitting 15 of 27 for 55.6 percent in the second half.
SIUE held a five-point lead with 8:58 to play when Bey hit a jumper, was fouled and added a free throw. Central Arkansas then made a 7-0 run behind a three-pointer from Taylor and a pair of baskets in the paint from Herbert. The Sugar Bears would hold the lead after the 6:37 mark of the second half.
"We have played a tough schedule this season, and this was a game we needed to win," Levens added.
