EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Raven Berry hit a pair of free throws with 7.7 seconds left Monday as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville defeated future Ohio Valley Conference rival UT Martin 49-46 in women's college basketball.

SIUE improved to 5-17 while UT Martin fell to 4-15.

The two teams battled with seven lead changes and three tie scores. The game began with both teams making runs. UT Martin started the game with a 10-2 run. SIUE followed that up with a 20-3 run, taking a 22-13 lead for its biggest lead of the night.

UT Martin scrambled for the lead by halftime with a 13-0 run of its own. It was 26-22 by halftime.

SIUE's Ashley Bey turned in an outstanding defensive performance, notably in the second half. The senior from Chicago nearly pulled off a quadruple double. She finished with eight points, nine rebounds, seven steals and six assists.

"She is just incredible defensively. It's unbelievable how much ground she can cover," said SIUE Coach Amanda Levens.

Michaela Herrod finished as the game's leading scorer with 12 points. Melia Duncan and Madison Meade finished with 10 points each for the Cougars.

UT Martin finished with four players in double figures. Cali Cupples, Alecia Weatherly, Darnisha Lyles, and LaBrica Ward each scored 10 points.

"I thought defensively we made the plays down the stretch," said Levens.

SIUE picked up 27 points off UTM's 25 turnovers. "Since Christmas, we have preached defense, defense," said Levens.

SIUE ended the game with a 6-0 run, holding off the Skyhawks with timely defense. UTM did not score a field goal in the last 5:37 of the game after Erica Glisson put UTM up by one with a three-pointer.

Down 46-45, Herrod hit a jumper in the paint with 3:58 to play. After a steal by Bey, the Cougar senior dished off to Melia Duncan to put SIUE up for good with 3:22 to play.

UTM then missed four shots from the field and the front end of bonus free throws twice. Finally, Berry provided the extra free throws after grabbing a rebound with 7.7 left.

"I was just proud they found a way to win. I think it got stressful when they went on runs and we had trouble scoring. We just weathered the storm, hung around and found a way to win," said Levens.
