The SIUE women's basketball team has now lost five straight as it heads to the road this week for games at Kentucky Wesleyan on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and Southern Indiana on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Cougars are 8-9 overall and 3-7 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Coach Wendy Hedberg has watched her team be outscored by nearly 13 points a game during the five-game losing skid.
SIUE has struggled with injuries from several of its top players. Jessica Robert (Carlyle) leads the nation in three-point field goal shooting and leads the GLVC in steals despite missing the first three games of the season. Tanya Guell (Plymouth, Wis.) was absent from the lineup for five games due to a knee injury. She is second in scoring at 13.1 points per game.
The latest to catch the injury bug is freshman Julianne McMillen (Pana). McMillen has sat on the sidelines the past two games with a leg injury suffered at the beginning of the year. McMillen was averaging 11.9 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.
SIUE is just one-half game ahead of Saint Joseph's in the GLVC standings. It will take a stronger showing in the second half of the conference schedule to once again advance to the GLVC Tournament in Evansville, Ind., on March 4-7.
