EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. - In a rare September home event, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's cross country team defeated Western Illinois University in the SIUE Cross Country Challenge Friday evening.
"I was real excited with the results today," said Head Coach Eileen McAllister. "I thought the team competed really hard all the way through."
Aaron Werths (Granite City) again led the Cougars with a second-place finish just 28 seconds behind the meet's champion, Mike McGraw of Western Illinois.
"Aaron ran really well and competed hard," added McAllister. "There are two, 400-meter hills to hit, so a 30-second difference on our course is very good compared to last week's race."
Werths finished the 8,000-meter course with a time of 26:42.
Right on the heels of Werths was Marc Amarillas (Quincy), who crossed the finish line in a time of 26:58.
Brad Walwer (Springfield) was the third member of the Cougar squad to finish coming in at 27:11.
"The rest of the guys showed a lot of heart as it came down to every man to beat Western Illinois, which was very exciting," said McAllister.
A trio of closely packed SIUE runners was the deciding factor in the dual meet victory as junior Shawn Dillard (Granite City), freshman Campbell Walters (Mt. Vernon), and freshman J.D. Wynn (Peoria) claimed spots eight through ten.
Freshman Kilian Sottoriva (Carlinville) also competed for the Cougars finishing with a time of 29:58.
According to McAllister, "the team will have a lot of confidence to feed off knowing they ran the times they did and competed the way they did on their challenging course this early in the season."
SIUE will take a much deserved break from competition before returning to action in Springfield, Mo., at the Missouri State University Richard Clark Invite on Oct. 2.
