Freshman Leads Cougars at Saluki Invitational

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Freshman Aaron Werths led the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's cross country team to a fourth-place finish Saturday at the Saluki Invitational.

Werths ran the 8,000-meter course in 27 minutes, 17.7 seconds. He placed 12th overall and was SIUE's top finisher.

Southern Illinois Carbondale was the team champion with a perfect score of 15. Jason Ordway led the group of five Saluki runners at the front. His winning time was 26:25.2.

SIUE placed fourth overall with 96 points. Washington University was second with 60 and Evansville took third with 82. Murray State was fifth with 151 and were followed by Missouri Baptist with 159 and Kaskaskia with 187.

Marc Amarillas finished 18th overall for the Cougars in 27:36. He was followed by Steven Werths in 22nd at 27:52, Sean Gosewisch in 27th at 28:15 and Jesse Holliger in 48th at 29:23.

The Cougars will now train for their own event. SIUE plays host to Border Wars on Oct. 10 at the SIUE Cross Country Course.
