Southern Illinois University Edwardsville cross country is making final preparations for this Saturday's NCAA Division II men's and women's cross country Regional Championships.
The men's and women's race begin at 11 a.m. on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha, Wis. The women's race is 6,000 meters while the men's race is 10,000 meters.
SIUE Assistant Coach Eileen McAllister said the Cougars will taper off their workouts this week, looking for a strong push for the weekend.
The SIUE men placed three runners among the top 10 at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships in Edwardsville. Justin Crain (McLeansboro) led the Cougars by placing fifth, Erik Steffens (Moline) placed sixth and Kyle Cameron (East Moline) placed ninth, all of which received All-Conference honors.
"The No. 4 and No. 5 men will have to improve their times," said McAllister. "The way our top three placed, they are coming around strong at a good time of the year."
The top five teams in the region advance to the NCAA finals in Pensacola, Fla., in two weeks. The next two individuals not among the top five teams also advance.
In the women's race, the top three teams and next two best individuals move on to the national meet. SIUE's best hope to advance may be freshman Kayla Brown, who placed eighth at the GLVC Championships.
"The way she races is that she is aggressive and competitive, which gives her an outside shot," said McAllister of the GLVC's Freshman of the Year.
